I am in need of ideas for an interactive/educational bulletin board with a western movement theme?
this is for a 2nd grade class.
also any good books for this grade level about the western movement.
What a challenge...let's see...
Make it a journey, like a trip that kids are taking. YOu will need a drawn Map of the US covering the whole bulletin board. A wagon train starting on the east coast, moving to the west coast on a daily basis - The wagon train could be picture of a Conestoga wagon and have it cut out and pinned to the board. Have a student move the image every day to simulate the movement west. You may want to draw the line that the wagon would have taken.
So for second grade, you may want to add to your lesson plans: directionals East to West; the actual states that the wagon is going through (maybe make a list on a side panel and some graphic organizers there). Your more advanced students might get the temporal aspect of this - daily travel, how long.
Might want to add some stories along the way. By the time the wagon gets to the West and the prairies - Little house on the Prairie might work here. I"m sure there are others but I'm not a reading teacher. Ask your IT person for some suggestions to use computers or even Smart Boards in some way.
I"m just doing this off the top of my head but you get the idea I think.
Could be a fun bulletin board.
