What are the differences between My Book Essential and My Book Home Edition?
What are the differences between the two Western Digital external hard drives?

I apologize for not directly answering your question, but I feel that it is important to inform you of this.
I have a My book home edition, and it simply stopped working within a couple months. I looked up my problem and apparently they are very cheaply made. I am advising you based on experience from myself and many others that it is very common for these hard drives to fail. It claims to be high quality for its price, which draws many people in, because it is so cheap in comparison to others, but they are very unreliable. I would highly recommend that you look into other possibilities.
Edit: I just looked up the drives for the heck of it, and it appears that the only difference between the two is that the home edition has automatic data backup and a "capacity guage" (not sure what it means by that). These features come at a $30 higher price tag with the home edition. Once again, though, I would highly advise against buying either of the two.
