If I remove a CPU from it's heat sink, do I need to re-apply the thermal compound?
If I detach a CPU from the Heat Sink, do I have to re-apply the thermal compound. It is still present however since I moved it do I need to re-apply it?
I always remove all traces of the old paste and re-apply it to the surfaces before putting the heatsink back. I I have already upgraded the paste from the typical bubble gum type applied from the factory, to a thin SILVER based paste, then I leave the very liquid, thin SILVER layers and just add more, being certain to ROTATE the new pieces together to re-distribute the new paste evenly before applying the spring loaded pressure clamps. The thicker and more "bubble gum" like the original paste is, the more difficult it is to re-apply using the old compound. Older CPUs often had white, greasy, SILICON, paste, which is OK for older chips that do not have the huge heat generated by the newer CPUs. I usually clean off the old white compounds and use something better on CPUs, but use the inexpensive white silicon on North Bridge and South bridge and other hot spots. Again, with re-using white silicon, I add a dab of new silicon and rotate the heatsink to re-apply a smooth coating before clamping down the heatsink.
For new CPU's there is such a small area, and such huge heat generated, that it is dangerous to foo around with "OLD" thermal layers. Remove the goo from both surfaces, and put the best thermal paste you can find on new. Again, If there is bubble gum, I replace it with either Silver, or Copper thermal paste. Once I use a more expensive paste, if I remove the heatsink after that, I just leave the old, high quality, expensive paste there, and add a bit more, rotate the surfaces, and then lock down - you can't do that with the thick bubble gum types!
