Can I install Windows XP to an external USB drive without wiping what is on it now?
I am running XP service pack 2 on my laptop. (Dell Lattitude D600) I have an 80 GB external USB drive which I use for backups and to store some files. In case of a disaster, I'd like to install XP onto that drive so I could boot from it if I had to. Question: Can I install it without wiping out the files on it now, or is that impossible and I have to wipe them to do it? If yes, how? Also, once it is a bootable drive, can I still mount it as a drive when XP is booted from my laptop's internal drive?

I already know I CAN boot this machine from an external USB drive - not looking for info on that, thanks.
The only thing I am interested in knowing is if I can install XP to the external drive without deleting the files on the drive. Please restrict answers to this question and only answer if you KNOW. THanks!
Yes, you can. Add another partition to the External drive. 1 partition will contain your data and you install your OS on the partition without the data.
You will still be able to access both the data if you boot from the laptop's internal drive.
You will have 3 different drives showing when you boot up.
