Why won't my Gateway desktop start?
My Gateway desktop [model number GT5654] was shut down last night and this morning the only things that come up on start-up are the light for the CD drive and the fan. Nothing has been changed with my computer recently and it worked fine last night. I've tried everything, even what the Live Support Tech from Gateway said to do and nothing has worked. My operating system is Vista and my computer is barely a year old and in good condition, so it's very confusing to me. Can anyone help me?
Had the same thing happen to my Gateway. Last one of those I buy. Pull the hard drive and connect it as a slave to another computer. If it works, you need a new motherboard.
Now, before you go buy a new mobo, keep this in mind. Gateway uses weird parts that makes fixing or replacing difficult. When my mobo went, I found out that Gateway didn’t use the ATX form factor, requiring a new case to hold the new motherboard. (good luck finding BTX). Then I found that the ram was old, and had to be upgraded. By the time all was said and done, I replaced the whole system, re-using only the optical drives. Good luck.
