My iBook G4 laptop does not recognise the external floppy drive I am using to transfer files from and old Mac?
I am trying to transfer files from an old Mac Performa 630 to my iBool G4 laptop using an external floppy drive as the performa cannot write to a CD. I had initial success and downloaded 2 files but the laptop now refuses to recognise the floppy drive. I have tried restarting the laptop with the drive plugged into the USB port but without luck. I have swapped to the other USB port again no luck. Any suggestions?
Have you been able to try the floppy drive with another computer to confirm that it is still working? Maybe a neighbour can help you out.
As Tony said, it's very coincidental. You have to make sure that you are using HD floppy disks - the 1.44MB versions, not the 720kB versions. USB floppy drives seem to be very picky about HD floppy disks as the only source. Some will cover the EHD (2.88MB) disks but not all.
Have you had this usbfdd for long? Is it still under warranty?
I always used Zip disks to transfer info but this would require you to get both a SCSI Zip drive and a USB zip drive.
The best option would be to return the usbfdd for repair or bite the bullet and buy a new usbfdd - some of them are as low as £20-£30.
You could remove the hdd from the 630, plug it into an IDE to USB adaptor and plug that into the USB on your iBook. They are about £30 from Maplin. I've successfully copied files from both 3.5" and 2.5" IDE (with a 3.5 to 2.5 adaptor) drives to an iMac using such an adpator.
You could also pick up a cheap SCSI external CD-writer on eBay and simply burn CDs. Then transfer them to the iBook.
