IDE Hard drive Jumper settings?!?
I've been trying almost all day with this Dell Dimension 4550. It came with a Maxtor DiamonMax Plus 8 30 gig hard drive. I do plan on getting a high cap hard drive but for the time being I'm trying to use this one.
Okay, here is what I did. I tried installing XP but didn't get anywhere. (It didn't boot from disc)
Then I tried installing Ubuntu. It got to 42% then gave me an error saying it might be my disc drive or my hard drive. So I replaced my disc drive which is fine now. Now for the hard drive. I've tried all the pins that websites tell me are master. I should mention I tried to have two (Maxtor and Quantum) Maxtor as Master and Quantum as slave. Nothing. So I decided not to use the Quantum and now I just want the Maxtor to work and now it's not.
The BIOS notice it's there but I get a "seek failure" some sort like that.
Any ideas?
Seek failure = bad hard drive.
Most likely the controller card is bad.
FYI: about the best hard drive you can get is a Seagate or Samsung. A bit slower than some, but sturdy workhorses nonetheless.
Try hooking up the Maxtor on it's own IDE channel, by itself and see if you have the problem.
If so, toss it and get another hard drive.
If not, try replacing the IDE cable. Sometimes those go bad too.
