What is the effect (advantage and disadvantage) if i use my Intel Pentium 4 to a dual core mother board?
my processor is a Intel Pentium 4 3.0 ghz socket 775, and i'd like to upgrade my old motherboard to a ASUSTEK P5N-SLi. Is there any effects on this even though the motherboard supports multi core processors?
The cpu support page shows that that board only supports the P4-631 3.0 Ghz P4 with C1 or D0 stepping on a revision 1.02 or newer board with 0401 or better bios for the C1 stepping(SL96L) and bios 0504 or better the the D0 stepping(SL9KG). There are 11 other 3.0 Ghz 775 P4s that arent on the cpu support page including 2 other 631s with different steppings so, unless its one of the two I've listed, it may not work if the support page is right.
You can confirm this by going to http://www.asus.com clicking on "support" then cpu support by motherboard then put 775 and the board model in. You can then verify the C1 and D0 stepping figures by going here, choosing "Intel Pentium 4 processors" in the "Select Processor" window. then, in the new screen scroll down to "3GHz" in the "cpu speed" windows then choose "LGA775" in the "Package type" window then click on the blue "Filter on selections" tab. It will LGA775 3.0 Ghz P4s. The sSpec number is on the heatshield of your cpu. You can look and see what stepping it is on that list.

I'm in the business and use Asus boards so I go to the Asus site a lot. Sometimes its really slow.
Just because your cpu isn't on the cpu support page it doesn't mean that that board wont run it but its a crap shoot if your cpu isn't on the board's support page.
Contrary to what someone said, just because the cpu fits it doesn't mean the board will run that cpu.
