Possible to connect monitor through serial port?
Hi, I have bought an old mini laptop PDA notebook off ebay to find out that it does not have USB or Network card installed... Everything has to be done through a serial. I have been able to install a wifi card by syncing the computers together with the serial ports, but I'm also wondering...
Would it be possible to sync the laptop with a larger monitor for home use, using the serial port?
No way. The serial port is a 40 year old or more very slow means of communication. Sorry. Video is very high speed, makes it look like a donkey. It was designed as a donkey. That is why is worked on 40 year-old hardware.
If you can try to describe what you would like to do, then perhaps someone can suggest something different. Try that avenue rather than something that is technically impossible.
Is a netbook a viable alternative for you? They are relatively very powerful and cost about $300 for a basic but very useful little machine. 160GB hd, 1.6 GHz processor. I've been looking, but I decided to upgrade my desktop instead. Tempting though!
Other thought for you, looking at the best possible return on your cash, some of the old IBM laptops, famous name that still lives today under the Lenovo brand. They were of the 2001 era. Those were pretty capable laptops that configured correctly had USB 1.1 (slow, but useable, PCIMA (a slope version, but the cards are cheap now when you can find them).
But in the ultimate search for portability at a low price, the netbooks are the answer. Older netbooks with no hard disk are now very cheap (it was a marketing mistake, they were always capable of running a hard disk), but for many epople now, unless you want to store more than web pages a simple netbook with no hd is a dream. Longer battery life by far. Plus, just carry a USB pendrive in your pocket. or two, or 3 or 4. They are so cheap now that hard disks are becomg obselete for startup drives of 80 GB or less. Much faster than hard drives. Backups can be scheduled regularly, but even then, pendrives or solid-state-drives as the big ones are now known are fast and pretty cheap as long as you don't want 100 to 1000 Gbytes. XP, for example, will happily (very happily) live on an SSD of 20 GBytes.
Look around. I might be time to sell that mini-laptop. Even at a huge loss. Buy teh future. The future is those little netbooks. target price US$300 WITH 160 GB drive. Coming soon to a shop near you.
