Hard drive SATA I or SATA II?
My hard drive crashed today
The model and specs (320GB Seagate ST9320421AS (7,200rpm), SATA 3Gb/s)
I am trying to find a replacement for it. Does it matter if I buy SATA II instead of SATA? Will it fit?
The replacement I am looking at?
Hitachi Travelstar 2.5 Inch 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA II 16 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0S02858
I heard that Sata I has an "I" shape and SATA II has "L" shape or it might be the other way round, not sure. But does this matter?
I just want to double check before ordering since I need the HD fast. Thanks!
I don't want to get the same hard drive since some of these similar Seagate HD are known to crash very shortly after usage, within 1 year.
Well, true for my case. So, I'm trying to stay away
Trying to get SATA II instead (if it works) since it is supposedly faster and better...?
A SATA II drive should work, but may have to be jumpered for SATA I.
Also, there have been reports that some SATA I motherboards / disk controllers have an incompatibility with SATA II drives.
Google the name of your system (or MB) and the part number of the drive and see if anyone who sells the drive mentions that its compatible with that system.
Or just buy the drive from someone with a good return policy. (but first email them and ask if its compatible.)
